## Power & Geopolitics

### Gulf Shipping Risk Is Keeping Energy Expensive

Reports of attacks on Gulf shipping were followed by a renewed jump in crude prices. Brent reached $104.85 a barrel before the cutoff, up 4.64%, while WTI rose 4.84% to $92.55.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com), [2](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) UKMTO reportedly confirmed two projectile strikes on crude tankers near the Strait of Hormuz during the preceding weekend.[3](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/1-million-tanker-was-just-start-every-crude-freight-index-hits-record-high-hormuz-works-too?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

The economic channel runs through shipping security and logistics, not simply the number of exported barrels. Gulf crude exports were estimated at 19 million barrels a day, equal to 108% of the 2025 average.[3](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/1-million-tanker-was-just-start-every-crude-freight-index-hits-record-high-hormuz-works-too?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) That evidence does not point to a complete crude-supply cutoff.

Transport and refining remain the larger constraints. Refined-product exports were still near 50% of their 2025 level, while the benchmark daily rate for a large tanker traveling from Saudi Arabia to China reached $1.33 million.[3](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/1-million-tanker-was-just-start-every-crude-freight-index-hits-record-high-hormuz-works-too?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Freight was estimated to account for 27% of the delivered cost of crude, up from about 3% at the start of the year.[3](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/1-million-tanker-was-just-start-every-crude-freight-index-hits-record-high-hormuz-works-too?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman reportedly increased to 12 million barrels a day from 5 million to 6 million one month earlier, with waits of seven to 10 days for transfer slots.[3](https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/1-million-tanker-was-just-start-every-crude-freight-index-hits-record-high-hormuz-works-too?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) That process keeps oil moving, but it absorbs tanker capacity and raises the cost of delivering it.

The current evidence supports an active shipping and refined-fuel disruption, not a uniform shortage of crude. The next test is whether further attacks reduce actual export volumes or whether security improves enough to bring tanker costs down.

## What Matters Now

### The Fed Retained Its Tightening Bias as Energy Pressure Increased

Minutes from the September meeting showed unanimous support for raising the federal-funds target by a quarter percentage point to 3.75% to 4.00%.[4](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/interest-rate/news/590264?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Most officials also judged that another increase could be appropriate before year-end if economic data warrant it.[4](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/interest-rate/news/590264?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Inflation expectations strengthened that case. Expected inflation over the next year rose 0.3 percentage point to 3.9%, its highest level since May 2023.[6](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/inflation-expectations/news/590240?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Expected gasoline inflation rose 1.7 points to 4.6%.[6](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/inflation-expectations/news/590240?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

The labor and housing evidence points the other way. Secondary sources reported September payroll growth of 29,000 and unemployment near 4.2%.[11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d%5FQHouy6br0&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com), [12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBWKr5ryg%5Fc&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Mortgage rates were cited at 7.45%, while builder confidence stood at 32 and 38% of builders were cutting prices.[13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSCZoTpPJIw&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Markets broadly expected no policy change in October but assigned about a 78% probability to another increase in December in the latest cutoff-valid report.[7](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-bond-yield/news/590355?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) That is a market estimate, not a completed Fed decision. Today’s unemployment claims will show whether weak hiring is being joined by an increase in layoffs.

### Strong Treasury Demand Provided Only Temporary Rate Relief

The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.365% Wednesday, while the 30-year reached 5.732%.[8](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/stock-market/news/590308?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Both were reported at their highest levels since 2002.[8](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/stock-market/news/590308?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Wednesday’s $39 billion sale of 10-year Treasury debt attracted bids worth 2.77 times the amount offered.[14](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-bond-yield/news/590272?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com), [5](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) The auction yield also came in 1.7 basis points below the level expected just before the sale, with one basis point equal to 0.01 percentage point.[14](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-bond-yield/news/590272?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) That indicated stronger demand than the market had anticipated and briefly pulled yields lower.

The relief did not last. The 10-year yield was back around 5.3% early Thursday as oil, Fed tightening risk and fiscal concerns remained in focus.[7](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-bond-yield/news/590355?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) The supplied evidence does not establish which of those forces contributed most.

Today’s 30-year auction is the next direct test of demand for long-term government debt.[10](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/government-bond-yield/news/590184?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Strong demand could repeat Wednesday’s temporary relief, while a weak sale would leave borrowing costs near their multidecade highs.

### Federal Policy Produced Immediate Company-Level Effects

Wolfspeed reportedly received a conditional $1.5 billion U.S. government loan commitment to support domestic silicon-carbide production and its supply chain.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Its shares rose about 14% before Thursday’s open, after earlier indications of a gain above 16%.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com), [15](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

This is a direct industrial-policy channel. Government financing can support factory and supply-chain investment that may otherwise be difficult to fund. The available material does not provide the final loan terms, payment schedule or production milestones, so the effect on output and employment remains unknown.

Federal scrutiny moved agricultural-equipment stocks in the opposite direction. The FTC and USDA announced a joint inquiry into manufacturers’ business practices Wednesday.[5](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Caterpillar fell 5.75%, Deere declined 3.8%, and the industrial sector lost more than 2%.[5](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Finviz attributed much of those declines to the inquiry.[5](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) The eventual effect on equipment prices, repair practices or farmer costs will depend on the inquiry’s scope and any remedies that follow.

### Small Companies Are Absorbing More of the Market Pressure

The Russell 2000 index of smaller U.S. companies fell 1.3% Wednesday, compared with declines of 0.22% for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite.[5](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Before Thursday’s open, Russell 2000 futures were down about 0.94%, the largest decline among the four major U.S. index futures reported.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Smaller companies are often more exposed to domestic financing and operating costs than the largest multinational businesses. Finviz linked the latest equity weakness to higher oil prices and Treasury yields, although the precise contribution of each factor is not established.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

The pressure also extended overseas. Japan’s Nikkei fell about 1.4%, while major European indexes were down more than 1% before the U.S. open.[1](https://finviz.com/news?v=6&sf=market%5Fsummary&ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) The immediate question is whether weakness remains concentrated in smaller and rate-sensitive companies or spreads further into the large technology stocks that have supported the major U.S. indexes.

### Oil Inventories Added Another Supply Signal

U.S. crude inventories fell by 3.186 million barrels last week, contrary to expectations for a 1.7 million-barrel increase.[16](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/crude-oil-stocks-change/news/590234?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) The previous report had shown an increase of 922,000 barrels.[16](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/crude-oil-stocks-change/news/590234?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

Gasoline inventories still rose by 382,000 barrels, compared with expectations for a 1.7 million-barrel decline.[16](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/crude-oil-stocks-change/news/590234?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com) Refinery runs increased by 223,000 barrels a day, their largest gain in 10 weeks.[16](https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/crude-oil-stocks-change/news/590234?ref=thedailyintelbrief.com)

The inventory data reinforce the immediate pressure on crude supply, but they do not resolve the larger Gulf logistics problem. Shipping security, refined-product exports and tanker availability remain separate constraints on the delivered cost of energy.
